Ransomware: How to Protect Your Business Data

Ransomware as a way of cyber attack is growing more popular amongst hackers worldwide. For them it is an easy way to extort money, but for you it would be a nightmare if you lose all access to your files and data.

What Is Ransomware and How Does It Work?

First Ransomware appeared in the early 90’s. It showed a false warning stating that licences of certain software has expired. For this reason it requested a payment to be placed in the name of a false corporation, as this was the only way to regain control over your system. And this is exactly what Ransomware is. By using malicious code a hacker can target your systems, take full control over them, and demand money in order to release them back to you.

Different Levels of Ransomware

There are three different levels of Ransomware. Low levels are usually fake anti-virus programs, who by pretending to search for malware, end up requesting money to fix it. In these cases your computers will not be affected. Medium level appears as a government or law enforcement message, claiming your computer was used for illegal activities, stating a fine must be paid. Here your computers could be locked out of their screens or browsers. High level is the most dangerous one. Encrypting Ransomware shows you messages saying your files are now encrypted, while demanding for a ransom to be paid within the given deadline. Bare in mind however, paying the ransom doesn’t guaranty that hackers will return access or data files back to you.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Business Data

Taking preventive measures is the best way to protect your business. Software and operating systems being used must be kept patched and up to date. Train your staff on how to detect different online scams such as phishing or malicious websites etc. Backup your data regularly, if possible avoiding mapped drives. Preferably keep your data off site or upload it to a high level secure cloud server. Install multiple layers of cyber security software protection, as it can help in detection and blockage of Ransomware attacks.

Keeping your business and files protected should be one of the major security factors to keeping everything safe. For more information regarding protection from viruses or being hacked, contact our representatives at www.tristaritsupport.co.uk.
